Bartow County 1/16/16

Today I went birding all day with Patty McLean. We started off by heading to Bob Zaremba’s house to get the Calliope Hummingbird that has been hanging out there for the past few weeks. After seeing the hummer and a short stop at a newly discovered birding hotspot called Ellison Lake and Marsh, we were off to Bartow County, where we spent the rest of the day. We started the morning birding the ponds off Mansfield Road. There were not many birds here, but there were some Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead and one American Kestrel. The next place we checked was a fairly large lake called Aubrey Lake. Not much here either other than some Hooded Mergansers. Next, we made the first of three laps through Brandon Farm and Taff Roads. The first time through, we had five Greater White-fronted Geese, a Greater Yellowlegs, tons of American Pipits and some White-crowned Sparrows. When we did a quick check a second time, there was nothing much new other than some fly over Sandhill Cranes. In the final survey of the area in the late afternoon, we saw a large group of Brewer’s Blackbirds mixed in with an even larger flock of Brown-headed Cowbirds. By the end of the day, we had racked up 64 species, 5 of them woodpeckers, 5 of them icterids (blackbirds), and 9 of them sparrows (including junco and towhee). What really made the day special, however, were the Greater White-fronted Geese, White-crowned Sparrows and Brewer’s Blackbirds! See below for a list of birds for the day.
