Camp Talon 6/2/14 – Little St. Simon’s Island and St. Simon’s Island

On the second day (first full day) of the camp, we took a ferry ride over to Little St. Simon’s Island and saw some cool birds there. This place was one of the best we visited because of all of the species we saw and I finally saw my nemesis bird – Black-necked Stilt. In the afternoon we birded around St. Simon’s Island on the beach, in a shopping area, at Bloody Marsh and at Epworth by the Sea. Below is a list of species with photos. At the shopping center, we got to see two adult Gray Kingbirds and some young on a nest. This was a lifer for me and another nemesis bird. Also, one of the highlights of the day was seeing two adult and seven juvenal plumage Clapper Rails out in the open at Bloody Marsh. At one point, the parents even mated – apparently preparing for a second brood! Below is a species list and photos.
